Florida's private school voucher program could be expanded to middle-income families under a bill passed by the Florida Legislature.
It was approved Friday in the waning moments of the 60-day session. It heads now to the desk of Gov. Rick Scott.
The measure would let middle-income families in Florida apply to receive vouchers starting in 2016. Currently the program is limited to families who earn up to 185 percent of the federal poverty level.
The bill passed the Florida Senate by a 29-11 vote, while it cleared the House by a 70-45 vote.
The voucher program expansion appeared doomed earlier this year amid a disagreement over testing requirements.
The final bill would require private schools with a majority of voucher students to publicly report standardized test results.
