Red Light Green Light

Bill goes to Gov. Charlie Crist this week

Florida drivers may not want to tempt running red lights any longer. Big brother will be watching.

On a 30-7 vote Tuesday, the Florida Senate sent a bill to Gov. Charlie Crist that would authorize automatic cameras to ticket red light violators with a goal of saving lives.

The bill is named in memory of Mark Wandall, a 30-year-old man killed by a red light runner near his Bradenton home in 2003.

Motorists who ignored traffic signals in Florida were blamed for 76 deaths and injuries to 5,607 people in 2008, according to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The state estimates it will receive $29.2 million in the first year while local governments are expected to get $10.1 million in the first year.
