Shopping For the Next Guantanamo

Obama officials to tour teetering Michigan prison, sources say

Obama administration officials may have finally found a place to dump Guantanamo inmates: a maximum-security prison on the brink of losing Michigan state funding.

Two government officials will tour the ailing facility today in Standish, about 145 miles northeast of Detroit, sources tell The Associated Press. Another prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. is also reportedly under consideration to house detainees should President Obama shutter Guantanamo by 2010 as promised.

Like residents elsewhere, the idea of housing the so-called "worst of the worst" in town has some Standishtonians skittish. "There's a difference between a homegrown criminal and a jihadist," Dave Munson, a local restaurant and bar owner told the AP. "I think we're going to be a target. They like 'soft' targets so they're going to come after us if their people are there."

But with 340 jobs at stake, the Obama administration could be on the winning side of this bet.
