Student Emergency Contact Cards Stolen from North Miami Beach High School

An investigation is being conducted to determine how student ID cards containing personal information were stolen.

More than 2,000 cards containing personal information of students attending North Miami Beach High School were stolen, according to Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The cards contain students' social security numbers, emergency contacts and dates of birth.

"The school district is notifying parents of the theft. The cards contain students personal information, which could be misused if in the wrong hands," according to a statement release from the Miami-Dade School Board.

Parents have already expressed concern over the situation and a representative from the school district is advising parents to monitor their children's credit reports.

According to a letter that was sent home with the students, the theft happened 10 days ago from the attendance office, and students say getting access to the office would have been tough.

"They have this thing where they buzz you in. You can't just walk in. You have to tell them what you are doing in there and they buzz you in," Denna Murdoch, a sophomore, told NBC Miami.

The letter also says the school is implement new procedures to guard against this type of situation in the future and apologizes to parents.

School police are working together with MDCP Schools and looking at surveillance video for suspects.
