Canes Fans: Cut Dolphins Some Slack

Dolphins offered Canes halftime ceremony as well, but UM declined

For all the uproar in South Florida this week, you would think the Miami Dolphins were planning to erect a statue of Patriots coach Bill Belichick this season, not hold a reunion of the Florida Gators' 2008 championship team.

It seems some University of Miami fans object to the Dolphins honoring their rivals on the field UM rents from the Dolphins six times a year.

There are a few flaws with Canes fans' logic. First, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said Monday the team made a similar offer to honor the Canes' 2001 squad, but UM declined. The U was not ignored by the Dolphins, quite the contrary, UM decided to use a 2001 reunion to draw fans to one of their own games.

Besides, Canes fans have conveniently ignored that there are plenty of Gator fans in the Dolfan community, seeing as UF alumni vastly outnumber UM alumni in South Florida.

If there weren't such a sizable Gator contingent, the Dolphins would not even bother to lure fans to their October 23 game against the Broncos with a special ceremony and appearance by former Gators coach Urban Meyer and quarterback Tim Tebow (now with the Broncos).

"We have to do everything we can to sell out Dolphins games," Dee told the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins need all the help they can get, considering their 101-game home sellout streak is in jeopardy.

Besides, it's not like the Dolphins are holding this ceremony at the sadly torn down Orange Bowl. UM could at least credibly argue that they owned part of that building. But the Dolphins built Sun Life Stadium (at least, former owner Joe Robbie did), not the U.

The Dolphins can do at Sun Life Stadium whatever they please. If UM does not want a couple of Gators taking a victory lap on "their" field, they should just go ahead and build their own field.
