Christian Yelich Takes Home Gold Glove

Christian Yelich is the first Miami position player to win a Gold Glove since 2005

The Miami Marlins received some good news on Tuesday when Christian Yelich was named as a winner of a 2014 Gold Glove.

This past season was the first full year that Yelich spent in the big leagues after joining Miami during the 2013 campaign. In addition to his offensive spark at the top of the lineup, Yelich provided Miami with solid and dependable defense in left field. He committed only one error in left during the season and made several spectacular plays.

Yelich showed signs of great defensive ability in 2013 as well when he committed zero errors in his 62 games. Just like this past season, Yelich spent a little time in center field in 2013 as well but mostly stuck to left. That will likely be the norm for Yelich who appears most comfortable in the left corner.

The last time that the Marlins had a Gold Glove winner was 2012 when Mark Buehrle brought home the award. Prior to that, it'd take going back to 2005 when Derrek Lee and Mike Lowell both won the honors. Yelich is the first outfielder to win the award in franchise history.

The Marlins had three players up for the prestigious defensive award as Adeiny Hechavarria and Stanton were also in the running. Hechavarria lost out on the shortstop honors when Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves walked away with the award. Stanton likewise fell short to Jason Heyward of the Braves.

The award season is just getting underway in Major League Baseball. Stanton is in line for the Most Valuable Player award which will be announced on November 13th.
