The Miami Dolphins exercised their fifth-year option on wide receiver DeVante Parker on Tuesday.

Parker is now signed through the 2019 season, but the contract is not fully guaranteed. The Dolphins can cut Parker following the 2018 season without penalty, as long as it not due to injury. If Parker is injured at the start of that new league year, his $9.4 million salary in 2019 would become guaranteed.

After a disappointing season in 2017, there was a question if Miami would pick up the team option on Parker. The 2019 salary is a hefty amount for a player with only eight touchdowns in three seasons. Last season, Parker tallied only 1 TD reception in his 13 games played.

Miami may have made this move due to a lack of other options on the roster and the chance that Parker's 2017 season was a fluke. The 25-year old was Miami's first-round pick in 2015 and could now be Ryan Tannehill's primary target. With Jarvis Landry gone, the Dolphins do not have an obvious top receiver. Tannehill's other targets will include Albert Wilson and Danny Amendola.

The upcoming NFL draft could address some of the depth issues on the roster for Miami. While the Dolphins could take a quarterback if one falls to them, the team may look to add in other areas instead. Miami could also trade back from the 11th spot if a fair offer presents itself. After a lackluster 2017 season, the Dolphins have a number of holes to fill on both offense and defense.

The 2018 NFL draft will begin on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
