Tuna Frowns on Smiley

Smiley has been the team's best guard -- when healthy.

Just when they sort-of filled one need on the line, the Dolphins have gone and created another.

Justin Smiley, an offensive lineman who signed a 5-year, $25 million contract with Miami in 2008, received a phone call from Bill Parcells over the weekend asking him not to attend the offseason training program that starts today. Smiley was told the team is working to trade him in advance of the Draft.

"It was an honor to play with my teammates here and for the Dolphins organization," Smiley said in a text message to ESPN 760's Ken LaVicka, "but they've decided to go in another direction."

That direction is apparently "healthy." (Yeesh, what's next, "talented?") Smiley was one of Miami's best linemen when all systems were go, but made good on his reputation for fragility shortly on arrival. He missed five games and eight starts in two seasons thanks to knee and shoulder issues, and Nate Garner played well enough in his place that the Dolphins obviously feel a trade will serve them as well as an expensive Humpty Dumpty.

The move comes just days after the Dolphins signed versatile and volatile guard Richie Incognito, who was expected to drive competition on the line -- but not, with just $25,000 guaranteed in a one-year contract, to exactly step into Smiley's shoes.

So, it's back to the drawing board where one more bust from the 2008 free agent signings are concerned. At least Smiley's got company, along with Gibril Wilson, Ernest Wilford, and Josh McCown, among others. Maybe they could start a union? The Fins are likely to keep populating it, a disturbing trend we're currently ignoring for fear of what it might actually mean.
