Dolphins Hope Contract Extension Heals Sparano's Hurt Feelings

Press conference to announce Sparano as still the Dolphins head coach has been canceled

So the Miami Dolphins love Tony Sparano as their head coach so much that they openly recruited three people to replace him, hopped on a private jet to woo an unproven college coach and offer him wads of cash and provided moving boxes at the Davie training facility?

With bosses like that, we'd welcome the unemployment line.

But such is the NFL and now it looks like after losing out on the Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes, owner Stephen Ross wants to make nice with his jilted coach by offering him another year of ridicule and uncertainty on his contract, ESPN reports.

A contract extension for Sparano, who is signed through 2011, doesn't guarantee he will be the Dolphins coach in 2012. Realistically, he might not make it through next season, but at least he knows that Harbuagh is no longer a threat.

But the extension is an empty gesture from Ross to say, "You're my guy until another guy comes along that I like better."

The Dolphins were expected to officially tell the world at a 4:45 p.m. press conference that Sparano will be the coach next season, which should have gone without saying since he was never fired to begin with.

But that has been canceled at the last minute. It's unclear why but our guess is Sparano had no clue he was supposed to attend since he has pretty much been in the dark during this entire process.

Or maybe the scorned coach is having second thoughts. Wouldn't that stick it to Ross?

The Dolphins have rescheduled for noon Saturday, unless of course, Ross has to catch another flight.
