Dolphins-Panthers Preview: Bush's Garden

Five things to watch as the Dolphins resume preseason play

The sports page has been dominated by UM's booster scandal, but the other team in Miami is actually playing football tonight. The Miami Dolphins are probably glad to no longer be the most embarrassing football team in Miami, but they've got bigger things to worry about with their second game of the preseason on tap.

Last week's opener against the Atlanta Falcons ended with a Dolphins victory, but the team hardly inspired confidence while the starters were on the field. They will look to get things back on track against the team that had the worst record in the NFL last season.

Here are five things to look forward to as the Dolphins take on the Carolina Panthers tonight at Sun Life Stadium.

1. Reggie Bush will play. Bush didn't take the field against the Falcons last week, and Daniel Thomas (starting in his place) was ineffective against Atlanta. Head coach Tony Sparano said Bush will start, and this will be his first chance to prove his own assertion that he can be a feature back in the NFL. Better tune in early if you want to see Bush make his Dolphins debu because he probably won't play in the second half. Brandon Marshall will also make his preseason debut tonight.

2. The starters will see lots of playing time. Miami has had fewer practices than normal this preseason thanks to this summer's NFL lockout. Sparano has lamented about the reduction in practices and reps all month, and he intends to make up for it by giving the starters extra playing time. So instead of seeing the field for one quarter, the first team could get up to an entire half of action. That means 33% less time will be spent wondering "Who the heck is that guy?"

3. Can the first-team defense rebound from a sloppy showing in Atlanta? Matt Ryan picked the Dolphins apart last week, throwing for 90 yards and a touchdown in a quarter of action. The Panthers will be starting rookie Cam Newton, so defensive coordinator Mike Nolan might throw the kitchen sink at him just to see how he will react. It could make for an exciting first half.

4. Which scrub no one ever heard of will do something amazing? Last week it was Phillip Livas, who returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown against Atlanta in the third quarter. Look for Clyde Gates to get an opportunity to catch some deep passes in the second half.

5. Can Chad Henne quell the boo-birds? Last time he played in front of a crowd at Sun Life Stadium, it did not go so well for Henne. It won't take many mistakes to cause the fans to turn on him again, but Henne should get a break tonight thanks to the Panthers' porous defense.

Kickoff is at 7:30.
