Dolphins Stand Idly By In AFC Arms Race

The Jets' acquisition of Santonio Holmes means this draft better be very, very good for the Dolphins -- who are reportedly trying to trade down. Sigh.

Wow. While the Dolphins wait until after the draft to conduct business, the Jets are, in a way, showing everyone how it's done. Last night New York acquired Santonio Holmes, a Super Bowl MVP, from the Steelers for a fifth-round draft pick.

Sigh.

Just a fifth-round draft pick.

Now, Holmes isn't perfect -- in fact, he faces a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy (surprise!) -- and the last thing the Dolphins should do is involve themselves in some knee-jerk reaction to what other teams are doing. Before you know it, the Jets will find themselves too old, too bitchy, and too broke, and we'll laugh ourselves silly.

But it is becoming harder and harder to love whatever plan it is Bill Parcells is sticking to so faithfully.

Consider this, via Edgar Thompson: the Dolphins' wide recievers produced 5 touchdown catches and 12 catches of 25 yards or longer in '09. Santonio Holmes caught five touchdowns and had 21 catches of 20 yards or longer in the same season, and would have cost Miami the equivalent of John Nalbone.

Miss four games? Jason Ferguson is going to miss eight.

A handful? Meet Richie Incognito.

Not guaranteed? There goes Chad Pennington, a multimillionaire quarterback with a fresh contract who won't be healthy for a year and doesn't figure into the Dolphins' long-term plans.

This doesn't even make sense anymore.

Parcells's plan to improve through the draft is sound (or was), but the Dolphins need to be more effective in free agency. For as much as essentially trading Karlos Dansby to the Cardinals for Joey Porter was a good deal, it can be offset by standing idly by collecting Patrick Turners and Pat Whites and while their enemies go on restocking sprees -- which may end up including the best linebacker the Dolphins had last year
