FIU Bounces Its Basketball Coach

Sergio Rouco had five losing seasons but will remain with the school in some capacity

Florida International has fired men's basketball coach Sergio Rouco after five straight losing seasons, including a 13-20 campaign this year.

Rouco finished with a 55-94 record in five years at FIU, which hasn't finished with a winning record since going 16-14 in the 1999-2000 season.

"We feel that it is now time to move in a different direction," FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said Monday. "Sergio will remain in our organization in a different capacity and we look forward to continuing to work with him to further build the FIU program."

The Golden Panthers have been the doormat of the Sun Belt conference for years and it will probably take more than a new coach to change the losing ways. But you can't fault Garcia for trying.

Since he became AD in 2006, Garcia has changed coaches in the school's dozen different men's and women's sports.
