Five Things To Watch During Dolphins-Jags

According to training camp, we've replaced Return Man Ted Ginn with people even worse

Unless the NFL puts the Jacksonville Jaguars out of their misery and ships 'em to Los Angeles overnight, they'll be hosting the Dolphins Saturday for Miami's second pre-season game. We learned a lot in last week's win over Tampa Bay, but at least 98% of it concerned rain plus dirt making mud.

As such, there's an awful lot to watch for as Miami plays a real football game on an actual football field just a weeks before the season starts -- and here are five of them:

1. What's going on with Jake Grove?

The pumpkin-colored center is easily one of most magnificent players on the team -- just look at him! He's a face full of mustachioed, PBR-ready glory! -- yet he's on the verge of losing his starting job to Joe Berger. Nothing against Berger, besides lesser size and skill, but we sleep better at night thinking Chad Henne is protected by a full-sized Mad Magazine cover and not, say, Joe Berger. If Grove can't pick it up, it also means the Dolphins just invested gave away $14.5 million in guaranteed money in an injury-prone backup instead of a solidly spectacular center with a run of bad luck. Only of of those is acceptable.

2. Does Pat White even suit up?

Pat White is not a good NFL quarterback, and this is pretty much the most heartbreaking thing ever. He's a lovely human being by all acounts, did incredible, legendary things at West Virginia, and was taken too high in the draft by men who should have known better. Is it his fault he's not improving fast enough? Or the Dolphins' fault for taking someone in the second round who was entirely unready for it? How could they be so off the mark? Armando thinks he could be cut any day, but whether or not he makes it to the final week or not, this was not supposed to happen to Pat White. It feels terrible.

3. Is Channing Crowder going to remain as soft as his beloved Sleep Number bed?

The Dolphins went and got fellow inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, but that doesn't mean Channing Crowder can continue being Channing Crowder. He's had plenty of time, and now is the moment when Crowder either needs to become a big boy or get off the team. Not necessarily tonight, of course, but considering this was last week, it sure would be nice to see indications of improvement.

4. Is Chris Clemons really the answer at free safety?

Tony Sparano says he likes Clemons paired with Yeremiah Bell, but he also sounds like he's trying to sell it, always harping on a lack of mental mistakes.  We got a look at Clemons in game 1, but for the sake of comfort and our chewed-off nails we'd like to see consistency. And not on paper.

5. Who's going to return kicks?

Ted Ginn just housed one for San Francisco, of course, because now he's good. But the Dolphins are going to try out cornerback Nolan Carroll, because all electric return men in the entire world died at once. At least, that's the only thing that makes sense. Carroll, of course, is speedy enough -- but we learned last year it sometimes takes an actual working return man to beat the Jets, and Carroll isn't it.

And lastly, can Brandon Marshall punt? We've heard he's been practicing.
