Florida Panthers Trade Mike Weaver to Montreal Canadiens

The Cats get a 5th-round draft pick in exchange

The Florida Panthers have traded defenseman Mike Weaver to the Montreal Canadiens. In exchange, the Panthers will get a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Weaver, 35, is in the final year of a two-year contract he signed with the Panthers prior to the 2012-13 season. In 55 games this season, Weaver has six assists.

Following the trade Tuesday, Weaver thanked the Panthers on Twitter, saying he was sad to leave, but excited for the opportunity in Montreal.

The Panthers now own nine draft picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, which will be held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise.

Florida plays Tuesday on the road against the Boston Bruins.
