Hidilyn Diaz's silver medal in weightlifting at the Rio Games ended a 20-year Olympic medal drought for the Philippines.

And she's going to get quite a reward.

Under laws enacted in 2001 and until now, never needing to be actually acted upon, any Philippines athlete who wins a silver medal at the Olympics is entitled to a bonus of 2.5 million pesos. That works out to about $53,000 in U.S. currency.

If she won gold, her prize would have been 5 million pesos, or about $106,000.

"I am happy. I did not expect to win the silver medal," Diaz said. "I just aimed for the bronze medal."

Several nations pay medal bonuses. The U.S. offers $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. Russia's gold-medal bonuses for the Sochi Games were reported to be in excess of $125,000, and other nations that have paid bonuses in the past include China, Italy, Canada and Australia.
