Golden: “We Could Win With Either” QB

Harris and Morris shine in latest Canes scrimmage

Canes fans hoping for a resolution to the ongoing quarterback battle between senior Jacory Harris and sophomore Stephen Morris will have to wait a little longer.

With 12 football players' eligibility up in the air (including that of Harris) due to the NCAA's ongoing investigation into improper benefits provided by former booster Nevin Shapiro, head coach Al Golden will wait on releasing a depth chart for Miami's September 5 opener against the University of Maryland.

Even if Golden had released a depth chart, it is possible he would have declined to name a starting quarterback anyway, based on his recent comments about Harris and Morris.

UM held its final scrimmage of fall training camp on Monday, and the pair performed well in a shootout, combining for 547 yards on 39 of 57 attempts with six touchdowns and no turnovers.

"I was really pleased with both quarterbacks," Golden told the Miami Herald after the scrimmage. "They both made good decisions."

Golden refused to even hint at whether either signal-caller had taken the lead in their summer-long competition, only saying "We could win with either one right now."

So Canes fans will have to wait a little longer before finding out which will start on Labor Day night. However, the ongoing Nevin Shapiro investigation could take Harris out of the running for the beginning of the season.

Yahoo! Sports' investigation into improper benefits given by Shapiro between 2002 and 2010 found that Harris received "food, drinks and entertainment" at Shapiro's mansion in addition to playing in pool tournaments for cash prizes at Shapiro's home.

If he is found to have received illegal benefits by the NCAA, Harris could miss multiple games in 2011, giving Morris an opening to establish himself as the top QB early in the season.
