Jacory's Thumb Freed From Evil, Restrictive Tape

Canes QB says his surgically repaired ligaments feel as good as ever

People of Miami, we are free. FREE!

Free from the restrictive horrors and bad memories of the medical tape that for the better part of a year has suppressed our joy and Jacory Harris' ability to throw properly.

And now, like Gloria Estefan, we and the thumb are coming out of the dark.

...A few days ago he stopped wrapping the surgically repaired thumb on his throwing hand with protective tape.

"It was just me being scared that something would happen," Harris admitted.

He had planned to play Thursday's season opener against Florida A&M with his thumb wrapped, but now won't. It feels as good as it did before he hurt it against North Carolina last season. He played the final three games with damaged ligaments, and then underwent surgery.

"I don't have to throw sidearm anymore," said Harris, who sat out spring practice.

Into the light, it sounds, and with a thumb that might possibly be bionic. Or maybe that's the hum of hope in our souls.

The first day receiver Travis Benjamin noticed no tape hugging Harris' thumb, "I ran a post and he threw a fastball at me. I didn't expect that."

Free at last, free at last. And just in time: the Hurricanes open their season Thursday against FAMU, and then head straight into the bowels of Ohio -- oh, who are we kidding, Ohio is entirely bowels -- to face Ohio State in a rematch of that awful night of which we no longer speak.

And it sounds like we'll get to see Vintage Jacory, he of 386 yards against Florida State, and not Blue Period Jacory -- during which, for a guy without a working thumb, 17 interceptions might be considered decent.
