LA Dodger Passed Out in Maserati After Hitting Cars: Cops

First baseman came to a stop in the fast lane

LA Dodgers first baseman James Loney was arrested after sideswiping several cars on the 101 Freeway before passing out behind the wheel of his Maserati in the fast lane, police said.

The accident took place Nov. 14, but was only reported recently by local media. It occurred just west of the 405 Freeway in Sherman Oaks, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang.

"His unusual behavior at the scene caused concern on the part of the L.A city fire paramedics and he was transported to Sherman Oaks Hospital for further tests," Tang told the LA Times.

Loney, 27, was arrested at the scene and then taken to Sherman Oaks Hospital.

Tang said Loney was driving his 2009 Maserati westbound when he sideswiped three vehicles, then came to an abrupt stop in the fast lane.

"The three parties involved in the collision including the driver of a 2008 Mini Cooper, a Toyota Prius and Mercedes Benz attempted to contact Mr. Loney but according to their statements he appeared to be unconscious," Tang said. "He eventually awoke and he saw all the people standing around him. He then attempted to flee the scene."

The police report said Loney appeared to be "intoxicated or ... under the influence of something."

Through his agent, Loney declined to comment to the Times. A person close to the player said tests for drugs and alcohol returned negative, but Tang said results from a blood sample are not in.
