Marlins Bring Casey McGehee Back

The Marlins have signed infielder Casey McGehee who was with the team in 2014

The Miami Marlins signed Casey McGehee on Friday following the infielder's release from the San Francisco Giants.

McGehee played for the Marlins during the 2014 season, and was a fan favorite. Due to a lackluster second half, Miami decided to trade McGehee away in the off-season. The Marlins brought Martin Prado on board to replace McGehee at the hot corner. Jeff Baker was placed on the disabled list in a corresponding move on Friday.

In San Francisco, McGehee struggled mightily. The lone highlight of his season came against Miami when he hit a grand slam. Other than that game, McGehee struggled to give the Giants consistent production and eventually lost his starting gig. Soon after becoming a reserve, McGehee lost his roster spot entirely.

McGehee was exceptional in Miami's first half of last season, so much so that he was on the "Final Vote" for the All-Star Game. The third baseman would end up missing the Midsummer Classic, but generated a good amount of votes from the USA and Japan.

The Japanese fans have remained supportive of McGehee due to his great campaign there in 2013. McGehee put up prolific numbers after finding difficulty landing a job in Major League Baseball. His production in Japan led Miami to take a chance on him, and that idea paid off. The veteran hit .287 and had a .355 on-base percentage in 2014.

For the time being, McGehee will likely see at-bats at third base. Once Prado returns from the disabled list, McGehee's role should be as a reserve. The 32-year old can also fill in at first base if needed.

Miami has three games left in the first half, and is coming off a win against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.
