Marlins Discussing Guillen With White Sox Again

Florida could move to acquire Chicago manager

It was only a matter of time before the Florida Marlins looked into the availability of Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen once again. He has long been a favorite of owner Jeffrey Loria, and his oft-fractious relationship with the White Sox means he could be Florida's for the taking at any moment, should either Guillen or Chicago go into bridge-burning mode.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported late Monday night that Guillen's relationship with White Sox general manager Ken Williams "is now beyond repair," and the team is renewing discussion with the Marlins about a trade for Guillen.

Guillen and Williams have had "at least two known heated blowups" between them, according to the Sun-Times' anonymous source.

Current manager Jack McKeon is only under contract for the remainder of the 2011 season, and it appears unlikely that the 80-year-old skipper will get an extension after the season.

Earlier this month, Guillen said in an interview he would be open to managing the Marlins, but he was less sanguine Monday about the prospect of returning to Florida, where he coached third base on the 2003 World Series team.

"I hadn't heard anything about [the latest talk], but I'm not really paying attention to that," Guillen told the Sun-Times. He added, "I want to stay here, but only if they want to keep me here. This is a business, so if they want to talk to other teams or talk to others about managing... I know it's not what I want."

The Marlins discussed a deal for Guillen with the White Sox last offseason, but balked when Chicago asked for an unnamed player in return (some reports named Mike Stanton as the player Chicago requested, others, Logan Morrison).

In July, McKeon said Guillen would "be an ideal fit" for Florida. McKeon has the ear of Loria, so perhaps Trader Jack is working to convince the Marlins to make one of those splashy trades that earned McKeon his nickname back when he ran the Oakland A's and Kansas City Royals.
