Marlins Drop Third Straight to Nationals

The Marlins lost by ten runs in Sunday's series finale in Washington, D.C.

The Miami Marlins were destroyed by the Washington Nationals on Sunday by a final score of 13-3 at Nationals Park.

The loss was the third in a row for Miami as Washington took the four-game series. It was one of the more lopsided losses of the year for the Marlins. After beginning September with one of the best monthly marks in baseball, Miami has stumbled. The Marlins are now 11-7 in the month, as they continue to try to have their only winning month of the year.

The game was within reach until the sixth inning for Miami. After the Marlins scored a run to make it a one-run game, the Nationals opened things up with a seven-run frame. Washington would go on to add three more runs in the eighth inning as well.

Justin Nicolino started the game for Miami and allowed seven runs in 5.2 innings of work. Nicolino walked two and gave up seven hits while striking out three. The rookie now has a 3-4 record on the year after taking this loss.

Scott McGough had an outing to forget after entering for Nicolino. McGough did not record an out and gave up three runs. The right-hander walked two and also gave up a pair of hits. McGough now has a 9.45 E.R.A this season in limited action.

Jose Urena has had a difficult time adjusting to a relief role and that continued in this one. Urena allowed three runs in two innings to put the game further out of reach. After spending most of the season as a starter, Urena finds himself in the pen due to an overloaded rotation.

The Marlins are off on Monday before opening their final homestand of the season on Tuesday. Tom Koehler is set to start the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
