Marlins Fall in Pittsburgh as Urena Struggles in First Start

Jose Urena made his first big-league start on Tuesday and took the loss for Miami

The Miami Marlins handed the ball to a top prospect in their 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

Jose Urena is ranked as the second best pitching prospect in Miami's system and he was making his first MLB start in this one. Urena did not fare well however as he allowed five runs on ten hits in only 4.2 innings. Its possible that Urena could be ticketed for a return to the minor leagues.

For Miami, this was its second straight loss and the tenth defeat in 12 tries. The long stretch of losses has dropped the Marlins to a paltry 18-29 on the year which has them in the basement in the National League East.

After Urena was lifted, the Marlins gave the ball to Andre Rienzo. This was the first appearance in a Marlins uniform for Rienzo who was acquired in the off-season. The right-hander gave Miami 1.1 perfect innings and he could stick on the roster for the time being.

It was a tough day for Miami's lineup as it only tallied six total hits, Four of those knocks were singles with Giancarlo Stanton's seventh double of the year accounting for one extra-base hit. Martin Prado also picked up a two-base hit which was his seventh of the year as well.

Dee Gordon's slide continued with a 1-5 day. After entering May hitting well over .400, the second baseman's average has dipped to .368. That average is still good enough to lead all of MLB.

The Marlins will try to avoid a sweep on Wednesday afternoon when Brad Hand is expected to take the mound.
