Marlins' Fernandez Strikes Out 14 in Win Over Dodgers

Jose Fernandez tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts in Miami's 4-1 win on Friday

Jose Fernandez tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts as his Miami Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Friday.

Fernandez was dominant from the start in a head-to-head match-up with Clayton Kershaw. The right-hander went seven innings and allowed only three hits and three walks. Los Angeles never got anything going against Fernandez in one of the most dominant outings of his career.

This is the fifth time in Fernandez's career he has notched 14 strikeouts. It is also the third time he's reached that mark this season alone. With the win, Fernandez is now 14-8 with a 2.90 E.R.A this season.

Miami has now won two games in a row and is back to only one game under .500. In the Wild-Card standings, the Marlins remain behind several teams. With only a few weeks left, Miami will need wins in a majority of those games.

J.T. Realmuto hit his tenth home run of the season and it came in the first inning. Realmuto had a solid day overall with two runs scored and a walk as well.

Doubling for Miami was Jeff Francoeur who now has 15 two-base hits this season. The Marlins had six other hits in the game which were all singles. In all, Miami went 2-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.

In the ninth, Fernando Rodney ran into a lot of trouble. After allowing a run and two additional baserunners, manager Don Mattingly turned to A.J. Ramos. The right-hander finished off the win for his 33rd save of the season.

Tom Koehler will try to make it three wins in a row for the Marlins when he starts on Saturday.
