Marlins Held Scoreless, Drop Series to Giants

The Giants won the three-game series with their 1-0 shutout win over Miami on Wednesday

The Miami Marlins were held without a run in their 1-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

After scoring two runs in the first inning on Tuesday, the Marlins have now gone 17 innings without a run. This is not the first time that Miami has had an extended scoreless streak this season. The loss meant the Giants won the three-game series in Miami.

During the loss, hitting coach Barry Bonds was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The ejection marked the first for Bonds in his coaching career. Bonds was furious following a called strike three that ended the inning. Both teams had arguments with the home-plate umpire in regards to the strike zone throughout the game.

David Phelps pitched well in his second start of the year, but took the loss due to a lack of run support. Phelps allowed one run on four hits in his five innings of work. The right-hander struck out five and walked three.

The Marlins had their chances to plate a run, but came up short in the clutch hit department. Miami was 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. In the bottom of the ninth, Ichiro Suzuki doubled with two outs, but was stranded at second to end the game.

Miami will be off on Thursday ahead of a series with the Chicago White Sox. On Friday, Andrew Cashner will get the ball for the series opening start.
