Marlins Lose Aaron Crow to Tommy John Surgery

Marlins pitcher Aaron Crow will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Wednesday

The Miami Marlins will not have Aaron Crow available for the entire season as the pitcher is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Crow was diagnosed with a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament last Wednesday and the season-ending surgery was immediately considered a likely route. This procedure is the same one that has kept Jose Fernandez out of commission since last May.

The Marlins acquired Crow from the Kansas City Royals during a busy off-season. The veteran was expected to fill a bullpen role and was also being looked at for possible starting duties down the line. Miami will be on the hook for Crow's $1,975,000 salary this season and they also control his rights for 2016.

Considering the lengthy rehabilitation process that Crow faces, it is likely that he will miss the first couple of months of next season as well. Miami may opt to non-tender the right-hander next off-season. Non-tendering Crow would free Miami of any financial responsibility as he is due to go to arbitration otherwise.

With Crow gone, the Marlins have less depth for an already thin bullpen. Sam Dyson did not have the best of springs but made the team mostly due to a lack of other options. If Dyson or another arm falters, Miami will have to dig into AAA where the supply is limited.

The Marlins are reportedly looking into bringing in other arms via trades. It remains to be seen if they can find a good match on another club however.

Miami will take on the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m.
