Marlins' Mattingly and Straily Suspended

Marlins manager Don Mattingly and pitcher Dan Straily were suspended by MLB on Thursday

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly and pitcher Dan Straily were both suspended by Major League Baseball on Thursday.

Mattingly's suspension is for one game, while Straily was hit with a five-game ban. Mattingly is unable to appeal the suspension, but will be able to manage the club until Straily's status is clear.

Straily has appealed the suspension and it could end up reduced at some point. Straily will be able to take his next turn in the rotation for the Marlins while he awaits the decision.

The suspensions are due to actions that took place in Tuesday's loss to the San Francisco Giants. Following a warning from the homeplate umpire, Straily hit Buster Posey with a pitch. Straily was immediately ejected from the game along with Mattingly. Even though Straily denied intent on the pitch, MLB apparently decided otherwise.

Both teams were warned after Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson was hit with a pitch earlier in the game. Brinson had come up with a big hit on Monday and the Giants appeared to be agitated by his sportsmanship. Brinson may have taken exception to an inside pitch earlier in the at-bat and then went on to celebrate the hit.

Miami will begin a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Friday at 8:40 p.m.
