Marlins Offer Contract to Adam LaRoche: Report

The Marlins have reportedly offered 1B Adam LaRoche a two-year contract worth $20 million

The Miami Marlins are keeping busy and have offered first baseman Adam LaRoche a two-year contract worth $20 million per the Miami Herald.

LaRoche most recently played with the Washington Nationals, an organization he had been a part of since 2011. Before that, LaRoche spent time with the Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Marlins already have a first baseman under contract for 2015 in Garrett Jones. However, the team is looking to upgrade that spot in the lineup after Jones did not produce as much as anticipated. Jones has a $5 million guaranteed salary in 2015 which Miami could try to move if LaRoche is signed.

LaRoche could be a perfect fit with the Marlins as he would be a dependable power bat behind Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup. The veteran had 26 home runs in 2014 and has averaged 27 a year in his career. One other plus is the fact LaRoche is a lefty which could cause problems for opposing pitchers in terms of pitching changes.

In his long career, the 35-year old has won a Gold Glove and has always been known for his dependable defense. That along with his consistent bat would provide the Marlins with something they have lacked at first base for several seasons now. LaRoche would arguably be the best defensive 1B in South Florida since Derrek Lee if he signs.

The contract offered by Miami could end up not being enough but there remains a possibility that the team could increase it. After officially signing Stanton to a 13-year extension earlier in the day, the Marlins are wasting no time in trying to bolster the lineup around him. Stanton will make $6.5 million in 2015 which has given the team a lot of flexibility to add more pieces.

In addition to LaRoche, the Marlins have been linked to several pitchers including James Shields.
