Marlins Reportedly Considering Jake Peavy

13-year veteran Jake Peavy was a member of the last two World Series champions

Jake Peavy has been a member of two straight championship teams and the Miami Marlins have interest in being his third according to ESPN.

In October, Peavy picked up a title with the San Francisco Giants after coming over during the season in a trade. The storyline was similar a year earlier when Peavy was traded to the Boston Red Sox during the season and won a ring.

It is possible that the team has not made a formal offer as of yet and this potential signing could still be very early in the process. The Marlins have only had some dialogue with Peavy's representatives thus far according to the report.

Peavy has been in the league since 2002 and was at one time one of the best pitchers in baseball. In fact, Peavy won the National League Cy Young award in 2007 while with the San Diego Padres. In his time with the Padres, Peavy was the ace of the staff and went to the All-Star Game twice.

During his 13-year big league career, Peavy spent time with the Chicago White Sox for five years along with the aforementioned stops in Boston and San Francisco. Peavy went to one more All-Star Game while with Chicago and also won a Gold Glove in that same 2012 season.

2014 was the final year of Peavy's contract that he had signed while with the White Sox before his pair of trades. As a free agent now, the 33-year old is likely in line for a short term deal in the range of 2-3 years.

The monetary amount that Peavy is seeking us unknown at this point but he should be substantially cheaper than fellow free agent James Shields. Miami had been linked to Shields earlier this off-season but the veteran could end up too costly.

The Marlins have a need in their rotation with Jose Fernandez set to miss at least half the season following Tommy John surgery. Peavy would give Miami an arm during that time and a continued veteran presence in the rotation even after Fernandez is back.
