Marlins Reportedly Offer Contracts to Fernandez and Others

The Marlins have reportedly offered Jose Fernandez and several other players contracts

The Miami Marlins are not content with having only Giancarlo Stanton signed long term and have offered additional contracts per MLB.com.

The biggest name among those offers is Jose Fernandez who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery. The ace of the staff will miss at least the first half of 2015 but the Marlins are trying to keep him for many years beyond that.

Fernandez is mulling over a six-year deal worth roughly $40 million according to the report. The 22-year old can be paid the minimum salary in 2015 and will then head into arbitration without an extension. While no deal is close, it is the first step in what could ultimately be a big moment for the organization.

Without Fernandez, the Marlins struggled to find a fifth arm in the rotation. Many names came and went but none could match the contributions of the right-hander. Fernandez not only brought pure talent to the field but also an infectious enthusiasm to the locker room. Fernandez missing most of the season is one of the reasons that Miami fell short in its chase for the playoffs.

Christian Yelich and Adeiny Hechavarria were also offered contracts with unknown terms. Yelich won a Gold Glove award this past year while Hechavarria was nominated for one himself. Marcell Ozuna is expected to receive an offer in the near future as he is a key member of a young strong outfield.

Stanton's $325 million deal was a large commitment from the team but only one step in the process. Securing deals with other members of the core could go a long way to luring free agents to Miami. Stanton took less than his market value in 2015 to give the Marlins payroll flexibility and these moves could take advantage of that.

The Marlins will send a front office contingent to the annual Winter Meetings next week where there are normally several transactions.
