Marlins Trade Justin Bour to Phillies

The Marlins traded Justin Bour and cash to the Phillies for Mckenzie Mills on Friday afternoon

The Miami Marlins traded Justin Bour and cash to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Mckenzie Mills on Friday.

Bour was claimed on waivers by the Phillies, after remaining in Miami at the trade deadline. Rather than let Bour go for nothing, the Marlins worked out a trade with their division rivals. By sending cash along with Bour, Miami was able to maximize the return.

Mills is a 22-year old pitcher who had been playing for Single-A Clearwater. The left-hander who was not considered a top prospect for Philadelphia may be sent to AA Jacksonville. Mills has a 3.51 E.R.A in 89.2 innings so far this year.

Bour is under control for two more seasons following this year, but he was a non-tender candidate. The first baseman has endured a tough season at the plate and his arbitration price may have proved to be too high. Bour could still end up being non-tendered by the Phillies following the season. The Phillies could also explore trades for Bour after the season concludes.

Philadelphia has no opening in the lineup for Bour, but he should see some spot starts at first base. In addition to giving Carlos Santana some rest, Bour will likely be Philadelphia's primary lefty off the bench. Bour also has a chance to reach the playoffs for the first time in his career, as the Phillies continue to lead the National League East.

Miami will begin a series with the New York Mets on Friday at 7:10 p.m.
