Marlins' Woes Continue in Loss to Mets

The Marlins saw their playoff hopes diminish even more in another loss on Tuesday

The Miami Marlins are slumping at the wrong time and fell to the New York Mets 7-4 on Tuesday.

Miami's playoff hopes are diminishing on a daily basis as other teams in the Wild Card race continue to win. The Marlins have now lost two games in a row to the Mets and trail several teams for the second Wild Card slot. The Mets had been one game behind the Marlins entering the series, and now instead have the one-game advantage themselves.

Tom Koehler had a tough game and it was a problem right away. The Marlins handed Koehler a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Mets scored three runs and never looked back. Overall Koehler allowed five runs on ten hits in five innings. The right-hander also walked three and gave up two home runs.

With a new-look lineup, the Marlins started fast and then did little the rest of the way. Christian Yelich hit a two-run home run in the first inning. The 16th home run of the season for Yelich would account for all of Miami's runs until the ninth. Yelich was batting out of the cleanup spot with Marcell Ozuna moved to second in the order. J.T. Realmuto hit his seventh home run of the season in the final inning.

Miami had nine hits overall and five of them went for extra bases. In addition to Yelich and Realmuto's homers, Martin Prado (30) and Dee Gordon (6) each doubled. Jeff Francoeur added his first triple of the season in the ninth inning.

David Phelps will make the start on Wednesday for the Marlins.
