Matt Flynn To Visit Dolphins: Report

After meeting with the Seahawks in Seattle, Flynn will be wined and dined by Miami

The Miami Dolphins will meet with free agent quarterback Matt Flynn in the next few days. With their chances at signing Peyton Manning appearing low, the Dolphins might have moved on to Plan B.

Adam Shefter of ESPN reported Thursday afternoon that Flynn, who is flying to Seattle to visit the Seahawks Thursday evening, has scheduled a meeting with the Dolphins as well. So far, Miami and Seattle are the only two teams to have shown serious interest in Aaron Rodgers' backup.

While Miami owner Stephen Ross covets Manning both for his talent and drawing power, head coach Joe Philbin worked with Flynn in Green Bay and has a high opinion of him. Dolphins fans would see a Flynn signing as a letdown after getting their hopes up for Manning, but the Miami coaching staff might not share that opinion.

Seattle has its own ties to Flynn, though. Seahawks general manager John Schneider worked in the Packers' front office when the team drafted Flynn in 2008.

Manning has yet to decide where he will play next season, but the Dolphins have not been called the frontrunner for his services in over a week. This explains why the team is shifting its efforts to Flynn.

The Palm Beach Post reported Thursday that Manning was never really serious about playing in Miami. Only with the help of Dan Marino were the Dolphins even able to arrange a meeting with Manning.

So the chase for Manning is all but dead, and Miami needs to succeed in their pursuit of Flynn if they want to avoid a nightmare scenario for Dolfans: Matt Moore as starting quarterback in 2012.

Miami re-signed backup running back Steve Slaton to a one-year deal on Thursday. Slaton played sparingly in 2011, but could see more action in 2012 under the West Coast attack the team will adopt.

Additionally, the team signed former New York Jet Jamaal Westerman. The third-year linebacker out of Rutgers recorded 17 tackles and 3.5 sacks for the Jets in 2011, starting three games. Terms of his deal have not yet been disclosed.
