Out of the twenty players with South Florida ties taken in the recent Major League draft, seven were Miami-Dade College Sharks.
That's neither a typo, nor an anomaly.
In fact, in 2008 no other school except the University of Miami sent as many players to the minors as MDC did, with 8. That's a whopping 15 players over two years for Miami-Dade, who just earned their third consecutive and 7th Southern Conference Championship in 9 years -- and just one player shy of UM's 16 draftees over the same period of time.
And people assume the Hurricanes are the only amateur baseball game in town.
Miami-Dade College (the "Community" is silent but implied since 2003) has enjoyed decades of baseball success, producing such luminaries as Bucky Dent, Mike Piazza, Placido Polanco, and Mickey Rivers, and current players including the Marlins' Kiko Calero, the Cardinals' Eric Fornataro, and the Blue Jays' Karim Turkamani.
If the 'Canes aren't careful, they'll multiply like gremlins and take over the city.
