Miami Dolphins Nominate Stoneman Douglas Coach Aaron Feis for NFL High School Coach Award

The Miami Dolphins have nominated Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's Aaron Feis for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.

The team announced Wednesday that they were nominating Feis, who was killed while heroically shielding students from gunfire during the Feb. 14 shooting at the Parkland school. Feis was the school's assistant football coach.

All 32 NFL teams nominate a coach, with the award winner announced at the Pro Bowl on Jan. 27. The winner is selected by a panel that includes Shula, the former Dolphins coach and winningest coach in NFL history.

"We are honored to celebrate the 32 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year nominees, as each embodies the integrity, commitment and character of Coach Shula," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "High school football coaches not only serve as leaders, but as role models dedicated to shaping the lives of young high school players on and off-the-field."

NBC 6’s Ari Odzer reports on the advocacy efforts by the parents whose children were killed in the Parkland school shooting. Many parents have focused their efforts on preventing similar tragedies from occurring.

Feis was a former student and football player at Douglas, graduating in 1999. He spent eight years as the head coach of the junior varsity team beginning in 2002. He lived in Coral Springs with his wife and their daughter.
