Wednesday marked the first game action of 2014 for the Miami Marlins and it ended with a 5-2 victory over the University of Miami Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes staked out an early 1-0 lead on the Marlins which they held until the sixth inning when Miami plated two runs per the official box score. The Marlins went on to tack on three more in the seventh inning to cushion their lead and end the scoring for the day. Part of that offense came courtesy of top prospect Colin Moran who was 1-1 with a sacrifice fly and a run batted in. Moran is expected to start the year in the minors but could potentially be a September callup if he has success.

Beyond Moran, the biggest day for a Miami hitter was via the bat of Mark Canha who went 2-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Canha is an intriguing option for the Marlins if they find themselves needing a righthanded bench player against a tough lefty reliever. Canha is known for his ability to produce against southpaws, but his potential chances to make the team likely went down the drain when the Marlins signed Jeff Baker. The latter has a great track record against lefties as well and his success has come in the big leagues unlike Canha.

The starter for the Marlins in this one was Angel Sanchez who pitched in A-ball after coming over from the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2013 season according to his Baseball-Reference.com profile. Sanchez wound up going two scoreless innings in which he struck out two and walked one. While Sanchez is unlikely to make the team this season, he remains a potential part of the future and was able to show off his talent for the first time in big league camp in this game.

The Marlins will take on the Florida International University Golden Panthers on Thursday. Justin Nicolino is the scheduled starter for Miami. Bryan Evans, Jose Urena, Michael Brady, Nick Wittgreen and Colby Suggs are also listed as available to pitch, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
