NHL Last Night: Blackhawks Edge Red Wings

DETROIT — Dustin Byfuglien scored on a penalty shot with 28 seconds left, lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings in a clash of the two NHL Central Division leaders on Saturday.

Chicago's Niklas Hjalmarsson netted his first NHL goal, and Ben Eager also scored before Byfuglien's conversion. Andrew Ladd added an empty netter with 10 seconds left.

Brian Campbell chipped in with two assists, and Cristobal Huet stopped 21 shots.

Sabres 6, Bruins 1

In Buffalo, New York, Buffalo's season-ending win over Boston meant San Jose secured the Presidents' Trophy as the team with the best regular-season record.

Thomas Vanek scored two goals, including his 40th, and had an assist for the Sabres, who were eliminated from playoff contention this week.

Having missed the Presidents' Trophy, the Bruins must settle for having the best record in the Eastern Conference. Boston will take on Montreal in the first round of the playoffs.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 2

In Newark, New Jersey, New Jersey took advantage of some favorable bounces that led to goals, beating Carolina in a preview of a first-round playoff series.

Dainius Zubrus scored the winner with 4:26 to play for the Devils.

The teams will meet again in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Panthers 7, Capitals 4

In Sunrise, Florida, David Booth had two goals and three assists to lift Florida over Washington in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Panthers scored twice in an 8-second span to break a 4-4 tie in the third period.

Booth, with 31 goals, became the sixth player in Panthers history to reach the 30-goal mark.

The Capitals clinched the second seed in the Eastern Conference on Thursday and will take on the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs.

Kings 4, Sharks 3

In Los Angeles, the home team finished its season with a win over San Jose, which received its first ever Presidents' Trophy regardless.

San Jose also wrapped up the regular season and will be the top-seeded team in the Western Conference playoffs.

Penguins 3, Canadiens 1

In Montreal, Maxime Talbot and Kris Letang scored short-handed goals 55 seconds apart midway through the third period to lift Pittsburgh over Montreal.

Pittsburgh will play Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs.

Montreal will be the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and face top-seeded Boston in the postseason.

Wild 6, Blue Jackets 3

In Columbus, Ohio, Marian Gaborik had two goals and an assist to lead Minnesota past Columbus.

The Blue Jackets, who clinched their first postseason trip in their eight NHL seasons on Wednesday, are sixth in the West.

Coyotes 5, Ducks 4, SO

In Glendale, Arizona, Viktor Tikhonov scored in the fourth round of the shootout as Phoenix beat Anaheim.

Anaheim's one point moved it ahead of St. Louis for seventh place in the Western Conference.

Canucks 1, Avalanche 0, OT

In Denver, Vancouver clinched the Northwest Division title with a win over Colorado.

Henrik Sedin scored 40 seconds into overtime and Roberto Luongo stopped 22 shots for his second straight shutout.

Sedin scored by banking in a shot off the skate of a Colorado defenseman. It was his 22nd goal.

Vancouver earned its second division crown in three seasons.

Colorado will finish last in the West for the first time since the team relocated to Denver from Quebec in 1995.

Maple Leafs 5, Senators 2

In Toronto, Martin Gerber made 37 saves against his former team and helped Toronto beat Ottawa to wrap up the season.

Gerber started the season with Ottawa before joining Toronto last month.

The Senators missed the playoffs two years after reaching the Stanley Cup finals.

Flyers 3, Islanders 2

In Uniondale, New York, Martin Biron stopped 30 shots and Simon Gagne had a goal and an assist as Philadelphia beat New York.

The playoff-bound Flyers remained in contention for home-ice advantage in the first round playoffs, when they will face Pittsburgh.

Flames 4, Oilers 1

In Calgary, Alberta, Mike Cammalleri scored two goals and added an assist for Calgary in the win over Edmonton.

Goalie Curtis McElhinney made 35 saves for his first NHL victory in his tenth game.

The Flames dropped to fifth seed in the Western Conference playoffs, and will face fourth-seeded Chicago in the first round.

The Oilers finished out of the playoffs for the third straight season since reaching the 2006 Stanley Cup final.

Thrashers 6, Lightning 2

In Atlanta, the hosts snapped a three-game skid with victory over Tampa Bay as both teams finished the season.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 43rd goal for the Thrashers.
