Panthers Beat Red Wings in Shootout

The Panthers picked up a win over one of the best teams in the NHL on Friday

The Florida Panthers topped the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout on Friday at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit has one of the best records in the league and has been a dominant home team. Florida meanwhile has struggled in games that have lasted longer than three periods this season. The win gives the Panthers 31 points with an 12-8-7 record. The win also moved Florida into a playoff spot.

Tomas Fleischmann's third goal of the year was the first goal for Florida on Friday. Dave Bolland and Sean Bergenheim assisted on the score that came at the 7:10 mark of the first period.

It only took about seven minutes for the Panthers to add a second score courtesy of Jonathan Huberdeau. The goal which Nick Bjugstad assisted on was the third of the season for Huberdeau.

Florida had an excellent shootout after a quiet time following the first period. Vincent Trocheck and Brandon Pirri both scored as the Panthers were a perfect 2-2 in the shootout. At the same time, Roberto Luongo saved both chances he had in the shootout.

In the game overall, Luongo had 29 saves on 31 chances. The goalie has done a decent job in December thus far while his team has alternated wins and losses.

Shane O'Brien was a healthy scratch while Shawn Thornton missed the game with a groin injury.

The Panthers will play again on Saturday in Buffalo against the Sabres.
