Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week on Monday

Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week on Monday.

Luongo was 3-0-0 during the final week of the season, as Florida tried to stay alive in the playoff race. While the Panthers ultimately fell short of the postseason, Luongo did all he could to help them reach their goal. Luongo had a stellar .955 save percentage in the final week of play for Florida.

During the superb week, Luongo also made some history of his own. The veteran took part in his 1000th career game, making him only the third goaltender ever to reach that total. In the milestone contest, Luongo had 26 saves and helped Florida win 3-2.

The Panthers had three goaltenders named Second Star of the Week during the 2017-18 season, with James Reimer and Harri Sateri taking home the honors earlier. Sateri stepped into action when Luongo and Reimer were both injured at the same time earlier this season.

Luongo battled injuries this season, but still turned in a winning record for the team. Luongo went 18-11-2 overall and had a .929 save percentage. The 39-year old is under contract and expected back in Florida next season. The 2018-19 campaign will be Luongo's 19th season in the NHL. After playing in only 35 games this season, Luongo will hope for more durability next year.

The Panthers found themselves in contention until the final days of the season, despite a lackluster start to the season. Florida was one of the best teams in the NHL during the second half. The strong finish to the season could give Florida's roster some hope for a postseason run next season. The Panthers figure to try and improve the roster over the off-season as well.
