Report: Stanton, Marlins Working on Record Breaking Deal

The Marlins are reportedly in talks with Giancarlo Stanton on a record-breaking contract

The Miami Marlins are trying to keep Giancarlo Stanton for years to come and those talks involve a record breaking deal, according to the Miami Herald.

As of now, the biggest contract in Major League Baseball history was signed by Miguel Cabrera when he signed a 10-year $292 million dollar with the Detroit Tigers last off-season. The potential deal with Stanton could eclipse $300 million according to the report.

The Marlins have been known as a franchise that avoids long contracts and would be getting out of their comfort zone with this type of deal. The contract would not only be long in years but would be the biggest contract dollar-wise offered by Miami ever.

Stanton who is a finalist for the National League Most Valuable Player award showed his value when he went down with a season-ending injury in 2014. His removal from the everyday lineup changed the dynamic of the team and ended any hopes of a playoff run. The Marlins are cognizant of Stanton's contributions to the team and the need to keep him in South Florida.

In the past, the Marlins were unable to secure another superstar bat in Cabrera and were inevitably forced to trade him when his contract became an issue. The prospects that came back for Cabrera did not pan out and the trade is looked at as a dark moment in Marlin history.

Rather than allowing history to possibly repeat itself, the Marlins have been proactive in their approach of retaining Stanton. Even if they can not come to terms on a long-term deal, the slugger is under team control through the 2016 season. It is possible that Miami would hold onto him for those two seasons and try and make a run for a third World Series title.

Stanton and the Marlins could also elect to work out a shorter deal if both sides can not find a meeting point on a larger contract.
