Road Woes Continue for Marlins in Another Blowout Loss to Padres

The Marlins still pace MLB in wins at home but they also still have the least wins in baseball on the road

The Miami Marlins are still having difficulty winning away from home, and that was made more apparent with their 9-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched decently albeit not as well as he has in previous starts. A long first inning and an overall lack of command kept Eovaldi's day short at only five innings. It took him 112 pitches just to get those 15 outs and it was the second straight day for Miami that their starter couldn't make it past five. The right-hander struck out three but walked four while also allowing a pair of runs on seven hits.

When Eovaldi exited the game, the score was tied at two which gave him a no-decision in the end. Carlos Marmol took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season after he allowed four runs in his lone inning of work. The big hit was a three-run homer off the bat of Chase Headley that began to put the game out of reach. Marmol's E.R.A on the season rose to 8.10 after the effort.

Things weren't much better for Brad Hand who entered next and was pitching for a second straight game. After a lackluster effort on Friday, Hand allowed another two runs in one inning on Saturday. Hand would likely be optioned to the minor leagues if he could be. However, the Marlins would need to expose him to waivers in order to demote the left-hander and as of yet, they have elected to not go that route.

Casey McGehee hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the first inning to give Miami a quick lead. The other run came courtesy of Reed Johnson who was getting a spot start in left field. Johnson doubled for the fourth time of the year as part of a two-hit day. Jeff Baker who was also getting a rare start had three hits including two doubles to give him four on the season.

The Marlins can still split the series on Sunday with a win and Henderson Alvarez will be on the mound to try and do just that.
