Sacramento Kings Close to New Record of Futility

Come Sunday night, the Sacramento Kings might own a dubious piece of NBA history.

Not the kind of history they will hang a banner for at Arco Arena, but history nonetheless. No team in NBA history has lost every single game in a season to the other conference. But the Kings are just two games away form that distinction after a loss to Charlotte, Wednesday. The Kings hung around and almost blew their record against the Bobcats, trailing by just five with nine minutes left, but they eventually succumbed 104-88.

The Kings players shouldn't get a all the credit for the record; they hung in the game while playing without leading scorer Kevin Martin as well as Andres Nocioni, then had to finish without Rashad McCants, who had scored 30 points but turned an ankle in the fourth quarter.

The organization, on the other hand, deserves credit for little else recently. Last year the owners — those lovable scamps the Maloof brothers — reportedly stepped in made the general manager hire Reggie Theus as head coach. That lasted a few games into this season, when Theus was canned and Kenny Natt was given the impossible task of running this lackluster team. The franchise needs to do a better job at rebuilding, because about the only thing Sacramento has left is a loyal fan base that deserves better.

Just two more losses and the Kings' run at Eastern Conference futility is complete.

Friday night the Kings step into the bright lights of Madison Square Garden to take on a Knicks team that ran past the Kings by 24 points earlier this year in SacTown. After that game the Kings fly cross country back home and Sunday face Philadelphia, a team that beat the Kings by 34 already this season.

The Kings are 0-28, just two losable games away from being a perfect 0-30. That’s the kind of history you don’t get to see every day, be sure to let your children stay up late to witness it.
