The Miami Marlins had a chance to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals but fell short with a 5-2 loss on Wednesday.

Nathan Eovaldi allowed four runs on eight hits in his six innings of work. Only two of the runs were earned however in what as a mostly solid start by Eovaldi. The right-hander struck out four and walked one while falling to 6-7 on the season.

Sam Dyson gave Marlins' manager Mike Redmond two innings of relief which could pay dividends in the next game. Dyson allowed a run on two hits while he was on the mound.

Anthony DeSclafani worked the ninth inning in 1-2-3 fashion to round out the pitching end of things for Miami. The prospect has been working in short relief during his latest stint in the major leagues and has done as admirable job thus far.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Marlins only had three hits with all of them being singles. In the final frame, Jeff Baker appeared as a pinch-hitter and smacked a two-run home run to narrow the gap from five to two.

Cardinals' starter Justin Masterson had his sinker working and dominated the Marlins lineup for seven innings. Masterson induced a pair of double plays and there were no fly outs recorded while he was on the mound.

Miami will open a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Brad Penny is set to make his start of the season for the Marlins.
