Dolphins Full of Double-Talk When It Comes to Taylor

The Dolphins' take on the Taylor situation is contradicted by their actions.

It's been over 24 hours since Miami learned Jason Taylor was visiting the Jets, and a quick check reveals we all survived the night. The Dolphins are saying it's all just business as usual -- but then, the Dolphins have been saying a lot lately, and then doing something entirely different.

Consider this, from Jeff Ireland's Q&A this morning

“Look, they know our stance and we know our stance,” Ireland said. “I’ve told [Taylor's agent] this. Tony [Sparano] has told Jason this. We have to evaluate things after the draft. That’s where we’re at.”

Really? You have to wait to figure out what you have in Jason Taylor? The Dolphins didn't feel the need to wait on evaluating the situation at guard until after the draft. Nope, they signed the troublesome Richie Incognito for nearly as much as Taylor's base salary last season. Think Taylor noticed?

Think one of the greatest Miami players of all time noticed when the team didn't need to wait until after the draft to re-sign Jason Ferguson, who will miss 8 games next season thanks to violating the league's drug policy?

In both those cases, the Dolphins have other starters at the position. They don't have any other starting-quality outside linebackers, though with luck they might draft one. But the won't get an instant Taylor, and none of the rest can even sniff his socks yet. Better wait on bringing that guy back!

Here's another confusing Irelandism:

"You have to balance having a young team with solid leadership. You have to have guys who can teach the young players to be leaders."

Guess who that sounds like?

Or this one:

"We know we need to get good players on this team. We know that and we have a little sense of urgency right now."

So does Rex Ryan, who was one game short of a Super Bowl last year and still wants Taylor.

One more quote, via Jeff Darlington:

"Ireland says the uncapped year has caused for less players on the market -- and thus less options -- making it more difficult to bolster."

Yeah, it must be so hard not bolstering the linebacking corps right now by picking up the phone.

Look, obviously Ireland and Parcells are focused on the draft. And whatever happens with Jason Taylor will happen, and ultimately, it's all business. But the more the Dolphins actually talk about this stuff, the more they look absurdly disingenuous. Maybe that doesn't matter in the long run, but it sure is annoying.
