NCAA Wrestling Final Ends With an Upset, a Flip and a Shove

The NCAA wrestling championships took place Saturday in St. Louis, and in the biggest match of the event, North Carolina State's Darrion Caldwell upset Iowa's Brent Metcalf. And then things got really interesting.

With a big lead on points in the closing seconds, Caldwell started celebrating, and Metcalf chased him. As Caldwell did a flip just as the match ended, Metcalf ran after Caldwell and shoved him while he was in the air. Meet officials ruled that Metcalf had shoved Caldwell after time expired, and Iowa was penalized a team point.

That could have been costly, as it put Ohio State in a position where it could have beaten Iowa for the NCAA team title. But Ohio State's final wrestler lost, and Iowa ended up winning the overall event, its 22nd NCAA wrestling title.
