President-Elect Barack Obama: Utah, USC, Texas Show We Need a Playoff

Say this for the President-elect's support for a college football playoff: It's not about political expediency.

In comments that will delight the football fans of a small state whose electoral votes he has no chance of winning in 2012 while angering the football fans of a large state whose electoral votes will be up for grabs in 2012, Barack Obama today congratulated Florida for winning the 2009 BCS National Championship Game -- but then reminded everyone that Utah has a case for No. 1, too.

Obama said he sent a message of congratulations to a friend whose son plays for the Gators. But he then reiterated his long-held belief that the BCS is a lousy way to crown a national champion.

"If I'm Utah, or if I'm USC or if I'm Texas, I might still have some quibbles," Obama said. "That's why we need a playoff."

I couldn't agree more. I fully expect Obama to get right on fixing this, just as soon as he's got the economy straightened up.
