Hurricanes To Battle Panthers in 2018

The Miami Hurricanes will finally take on the FIU Panthers again in 2018 after 11 years apart on the gridiron

The Miami Hurricanes and Florida International University Panthers have not faced off on a football field since 2007 but come September 22, 2018, that will change.

The announcement about the new series between the schools took place on Friday morning. The game in 2018 will be a home game for the Hurricanes at Sun Life Stadium. There will be a second game in November of 2019 but a location for that contest has not been decided as of yet. The second game will be hosted by the Panthers regardless of its location.

Possible locations for the second game include Marlins Park according to the Miami Herald. It would not be the first football game played in the park as the new Miami Beach Bowl will take place there in December of this year. The location is the old site of the Orange Bowl and the bowl game will be the first football contest on the site since the famous complex was torn down.

The previous contest between FIU and UM in 2007 took place at the Orange Bowl and it was the second time the two schools took on one another. UM came away with a 23-9 victory that day and it followed a year after an on-field incident between the schools.

The 2006 game which was the first time the schools played each other on the gridiron featured a 35-0 blowout by the Hurricanes. The score of the game was a secondary story though due to an on-field brawl between the schools. That incident took place in the third quarter of the game and resulted in a combined 29 suspensions and two dismissals.

The Panthers are a member of Conference USA and they lost their first game of the season on Saturday to Bethune-Cookman. The Hurricanes also dropped their 2014 opener when they fell to Louisville on Monday.
