Koehler Gives Marlins Eight Shutout Innings To Complete Sweep Of Mets

Tom Koehler gave the Marlins eight shutout innings and helped them complete a sweep of the Mets

The Miami Marlins swept the New York Mets on Wednesday behind eight shutout innings from Tom Koehler in a 1-0 walk-off win.

The win was the fourth in a row for Miami and their eighth in the last nine games. The run of wins has propelled Miami right into the thick of the National League East race. Entering the day, Miami sat in second place and only a half game back in the division.

In the bottom of the ninth, Giancarlo Stanton started the inning with a line drive into left-field for a single. Casey McGehee came up next and worked a walk to move Stanton into scoring position with nobody out for Garrett Jones. The first baseman flew out to right-field to move the winning run to third. Marcell Ozuna then hit a sacrifice fly to center-field to end the game with Stanton sliding in ahead of the throw at the plate.

Koehler struck out five hitters in his eight frames including the last two he opposed. Going along with that, the right-hander walked only one and gave up two hits. Despite being at the back of the rotation, Koehler has looked much more like a frontline starter all year. His E.R.A of 1.99 is second only to Jose Fernandez in the rotation for Miami.

Due to the lack of offense from Miami, Koehler could not come away a winner in this one. Steve Cishek pitched the ninth looking to keep the game tied and did just that with a 1-2-3 inning.

It was a tough day for the offense outside of the game winning moment with the team only having two hits during the first eight innings. Both were singles with one each coming from Derek Dietrich and McGehee. The best opportunity for the Marlins against starter Zack Wheeler came in the sixth inning with two on and none out, before Stanton grounded into his second double-play of the game.

The Marlins will open an 11-game road trip in San Diego on Thursday with Jacob Turner scheduled to start. Although the Marlins have the most wins at home in Major League Baseball, they also have the fewest wins on the road. This trip to the opposite coast will be a good test for a team currently in the mix for the division.
