Latos Solid in Debut For Marlins

Mat Latos threw saw his first game action as a member of the Marlins on Friday

Mat Latos made his spring debut for the Miami Marlins in a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Latos who was acquired in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds during the off-season went three strong innings. The veteran had only worked in simulated games prior to this one but should now stick in the regular rotation. Latos allowed two hits, two walks, no runs and struck out a pair.

Mike Dunn, Aaron Crow, Steve Cishek, A.J. Ramos and Sam Dyson all worked in relief after Latos exited. Every pitcher that saw action today could be a part of the bullpen on Opening Day. As the regular season approaches, Miami will continue to give more of the workload to arms that are expected to make the team.

The biggest offensive day for Miami was had by Reid Brignac. The non-roster invitee is off to a terrific start in the Grapefruit League. Brignac had a three-run triple in the win to give him six runs batted in this spring. The former Tampa Bay Ray is now hitting .538 in the Grapefruit League and could be the leading candidate for a reserve infielder role.

Also in the mix for a bench job is Miguel Rojas but he has struggled thus far. An 0-1 day makes him 0 for 8 in the spring. With Brignac's success, Rojas may need to get his going back quickly if he is to make the squad.

Mike Morse brought home his sixth run of the year which ties him for the team lead in RBI with Brignac. Morse who signed a contract in the off-season has looked great so far while batting in the middle of Miami's lineup.

David Phelps will take the ball on Saturday when the Marlins travel to Viera for a game with the Washington Nationals at 1:05 p.m.
