Marlins Acquire Fernando Rodney

The Marlins have acquired Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres

The Miami Marlins have acquired veteran reliever Fernando Rodney in a trade with the San Diego Padres.

The Marlins sent Single-A prospect Chris Paddack to San Diego in exchange for Rodney. Paddack was one of Miami's finest young arms with a 0.95 E.R.A this season. The 20-year old had been pitching for Greensboro and was considered a part of Miami's future.

Rodney is enjoying a masterful season while serving as San Diego's closer. A.J. Ramos is also posting solid numbers as Miami's closer. It is unknown if Rodney will take over Miami's closer following the trade, or if he would work in a set-up role.

This year Rodney has amassed 33 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched. The veteran has only allowed one earned run all season and has a 0.31 E.R.A. Rodney's 0.872 WHIP is one of the best marks of his career as well. Rodney who is expected to be named to the All-Star team, has 17 saves despite playing on one of the worst teams in baseball.

Rodney is 39 and has been in many locations during his career. Last year, Rodney struggled while with the Seattle Mariners, but turned his season around in Chicago with the Cubs. That production led to him signing with the Padres this past off-season.

In addition to his $1,600,000 contract for this season, Rodney's contract also includes a team option for 2017 valued at $2,000,000.
