Marlins Offense Comes Alive in Rout

The Marlins sent their B-team to Port St. Lucie but still beat the Mets easily

The Miami Marlins put on an explosive display of offense in their 13-2 win over the New York Mets on Monday.

Despite putting a lineup on the field that consisted of mostly reserves, the Marlins scored early and often. By the end of the third inning, Miami already held a 9-1 advantage and never looked back.

Michael Morse continued his hot start with another two runs batted in. The first baseman now has five RBI and is hitting a robust .429 in the Grapefruit League. Morse who is expected to hit in the heart of Miami's lineup has also been patient at the plate thus far.

Non-roster invitee Reid Brignac had the biggest day for Miami with three hits and three runs batted in. The veteran infielder has done an exceptional job with his opportunities so far and remains an option for the Opening Day roster. Should Brignac make the team, he would serve as a reserve for multiple infield spots.

Jordany Valdespin who spent time with the big league team in 2014 had a good day as well. Valdespin is not expected to make the team out of camp but would be a call-up option during the year. In this one, the veteran tripled for the second time and brought home three runs of his own.

Avery Romero who is considered one of Miami's top prospects homered for the first time this year. Romero will likely be assigned to minor-league camp early and may not see many more at-bats with Miami.

David Phelps who was starting in place of Mat Latos gave Miami three solid innings. Phelps gave up a run on three hits and is expected to be a middle reliever for the Marlins when the season starts. Latos was scratched so he could ease into things after an injury-riddled 2014 season.

The Marlins will welcome the Washington Nationals to Jupiter on Tuesday for a game that is set to begin at 1:05 p.m.
